Moana Pasifika Head Coach Tana Umaga says there is special significance in launching their Super Rugby Pacific campaign in Fiji against the Fijian Drua, as it carries added meaning with two Pacific Island teams meeting in the Islands.

He says it is an awesome opportunity to celebrate teams representing the Pacific and that this is what the competition is about.

Umaga also acknowledges the challenge awaiting his side at Churchill Park in Lautoka, where the Drua traditionally thrive on passionate home support.

He says the Drua are a dangerous team who feed off their crowd, and for Moana Pasifika, the focus will be on their own strengths and bringing energy from the start.

Meanwhile, William Havili will make history this Saturday when he becomes the first Moana Pasifika player to reach 50 appearances.

The 27-year-old playmaker, who has been with the club since its inaugural 2022 season, describes the milestone as a special achievement.

Havili says it is an honour and a privilege to represent Moana Pasifika for 50 games and he hopes they can deliver a strong performance for their fans and secure the win.

He is expecting an expansive, high-tempo contest, saying both sides like to move the ball around and the conditions in Fiji will add another challenge.

Moana Pasifika head into the clash confident after building strongly through preseason, including a hit-out against the Highlanders.

While acknowledging there are areas to improve, Havili says there are plenty of positives to build on.

Saturday’s match will also mark a leadership milestone, with Miracle Faiilagi captaining the side for the first time.

He will be joined in the back row by Semisi Paea and Semisi Tupou Ta’eiloa.

Fans will also get their first look at powerhouse midfielder Ngani Laumape in Moana Pasifika colours as he forms a midfield combination with Lalomilo Lalomilo.

On the bench, Wellington loose forward Dominic Ropeti and utility back Glen Vaihu are in line to make their debuts, while winger Denzel Samoa earns his first inclusion in the matchday 23 after impressing during preseason.

Moana Pasifika will be without several players due to injury, including Augustine Pulu, Jimmy Tupou, Niko Jones, Ola Tauelangi, Tupou Afungia, Paula Latu and Tevita Latu.

The Fijian Drua play Moana Pasifika at 3.35pm this Saturday at Churchill Park in Lautoka.
