Two people have been killed and six others injured in a shooting at a church parking lot in Salt Lake City’s Rose Park neighborhood during a funeral service last night.

The incident occurred at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 660 N. Redwood Road.

The victims who died have been identified as 38-year-old Sione Vatuvei and 46-year-old Vaea Tulikihihifo.

Police confirm all victims are adults, with three in critical condition and three others in unknown condition.

Salt Lake City Police say the shooter or shooters remain at large.

The suspect's vehicle is described as a grey or silver car.

Two individuals were briefly detained for questioning, and authorities are investigating whether the suspect or suspects attended the funeral.

A police perimeter was established between 500 North and 700 North along Redwood Road, extending to the Jordan River, as officers and gang units carried out investigations.

Police Chief Brian Redd says the shooting is not believed to be a religiously motivated attack or a random act.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall has offered condolences to the victims’ families and says law enforcement will continue efforts to find those responsible.

About 200 people were inside the church at the time of the shooting.

Witnesses described the scene as terrifying, while residents have expressed grief and concerns about safety in the community.

A church spokesperson says they are cooperating fully with police and are deeply concerned that a sacred space was violated.

The FBI’s Salt Lake field office is assisting with investigations. Utah Senator Mike Lee and the Salt Lake City Council have called on the public to pray for the victims and share any information that may help police.
