The Pacific Recycling Foundation has recognised Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva for its outstanding leadership in recycling and sustainable waste management, marking more than 10 years of consistent environmental commitment.
PRF says that Tanoa Plaza is among the first urban hotels in Suva to adopt structured recycling practices.
They say over the past decade, it has diverted approximately 32 tonnes of recyclable materials from the Naboro landfill through its partnership with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited.
PRF Founder Amitesh Deo says the hotel has shown that urban hospitality businesses can play a meaningful role in environmental sustainability.
Deo says Tanoa Plaza’s long-term commitment to recycling and other sustainable practices not only reduces waste but inspires other businesses and communities to take environmental action.
He says the hotel has also introduced practical sustainability measures such as a garden-to-table approach using limited on-site garden space to grow fresh produce for its meals, and has reduced single-use plastics by replacing bottled water with dispensers on each floor.
He also explaiins that it also maintains effective waste-sorting systems with clearly marked recycling bins in guest areas, conference rooms and staff zones, reinforcing awareness and responsible practices among guests and staff.
He highlights that the Tanoa Plaza Hotel has also supported PRF’s recycling awareness programs and initiatives to assist the Collection Pillars of Recycling—individuals who play a key role in Fiji’s recycling efforts.
Hotel General Manager Mere Rakoroi says the journey began with the Reddy Foundation, the platform through which Tanoa Hotels directs its environmental and community responsibilities.
She says the guidance and support of PRF and WRFL have helped ensure that their sustainability goals are translated into meaningful and measurable outcomes.
PRF says Tanoa Plaza’s efforts demonstrate that long-term dedication by urban hotels can make a lasting and positive environmental impact.
