Following public concern over a strong waste smell coming from the Carpenters Shipping yard at Edinburgh Drive, opposite the Mobil Service Station in Suva, Suva City Council Chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa says an abatement notice has been issued to the company for smell nuisance and waste accumulation, in accordance with the Public Health Act.
Waste was seen dumped in the yard, causing the stench to spread to the outskirts of the city, towards Walu Bay.
Boseiwaqa says the notice expired last Friday.
He says a re-inspection will be carried out tomorrow, and if the company fails to comply, the council will proceed with legal action.
Boseiwaqa also confirmed that the company has informed the council that it has applied for a waste storage permit from the Ministry of Environment, and that the application is currently being processed.
