The Sawani to Colo-i-Suva Water Project is expected to be commissioned by February next year.
This was highlighted by the Water Authority of Fiji CEO Seru Soderberg, who says that currently, the installation of the pipe works is underway, and works started around November last year.
He says while the contractors are doing the pipeline installation, they are also carrying out the assembly works for the power station and the new reservoirs that will be constructed in Colo-i-Suva.
He adds that there will be two 5-million litre capacity tanks in Colo-i-Suva to cater not only for the Colo-i-Suva area, but also Dokanaisuva, Tacirua, Khalsa, as well as the Upper Ridgeline.
The CEO says these are the communities that face the greatest impact whenever there is an issue with the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant.
Soderberg says that whenever there is a high turbidity situation at the plant, these communities are the first to go without water and the last to have services restored.
He adds that on the current trajectory, they are looking at the end of December to mid-January next year for physical construction to be completed, followed by testing.
He says they are expecting to commission the project and get it into operation by February.
Last Wednesday, Cabinet approved the surrender of a portion of the Colo-i-Suva Forest Reserve lease to allow the Water Authority of Fiji to upgrade and expand its water infrastructure.
The upgrade will improve the reliability and capacity of water supply, supporting the growing needs of residents in the surrounding areas.
