More women will now be empowered through new economic opportunities following the groundbreaking of the Suva Market Inspiring Women Cooperative Restaurants and Bakery.

During the groundbreaking, Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa stressed the project represents a new chapter of empowerment and opportunity, strengthening women’s participation in the economy.

He highlights that government support for cooperatives has increased, with funding under the Cooperative Grant Programme rising to $600,000 in 2025 to support women and youth led.

Nalumisa emphasizes this will provide access to resources, opportunities and sustainable growth, while promoting entrepreneurship within communities.

He also points to successful examples locally and internationally, stressing that women-led cooperatives can strengthen families, communities and the broader economy.

Meanwhile, Director of Cooperatives Iosefo Koroidimuri says the initiative reflects the resilience and determination of women vendors.

He highlights the journey has not been easy, with members facing challenges over several months, but their efforts have resulted in the establishment of the cooperative.

Koroidimuri adds that about 20 small businesses have come together under one cooperative, showing that unity creates greater opportunities.

He also highlights global success stories such as Amul, noting that Fiji has the potential to replicate similar achievements through strong cooperative models.

He stresses the need to increase participation in the business sector and encouraged women to remain committed, saying the sky is the limit if they continue working together.

UNDP Pacific Deputy Team Leader Patrick Tuimaleliifano says the project is an investment in economic dignity, women’s leadership and long-term resilience.

He adds that supporting women in markets contributes directly to economic growth, food security and sustainable development, especially in the face of climate change and global economic challenges.
