After being acquitted of abuse of office earlier this year, Government backbencher Kalaveti Ravu told Parliament that the legal battle tested his reputation but strengthened his resolve to continue serving the people of Fiji.
Ravu made these remarks while responding to the opening address delivered by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu at the start of the new parliamentary session.
Ravu reflected on the legal proceedings he faced over the past year, saying the journey had been difficult both personally and professionally.
Earlier this year, Ravu and Principal Fisheries Officer for the Northern Division Tekata Toaisi were acquitted of charges laid against them following a ruling by Resident Magistrate Jeremaia Savou that there was no case to answer at the close of the prosecution’s case.
Ravu had been charged with abuse of office, while Toaisi faced a charge of aiding and abetting abuse of office.
Meanwhile, earlier this year, Ravu also faced criticism over an alleged social media post in which he was accused of using offensive language directed at members of the public supporting a court case involving Charlie Charters.
Great Council of Chiefs member and Rewa chief, Ro Naulu Mataitini said elected leaders carry a responsibility to uphold dignity and respect, particularly when engaging with members of the public.
People's Alliance Party General Secretary Sila Balawa has not yet responded to our questions on what is the party's stand on Ravu's offensive comments.
