Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reminded police officers that the people of Fiji expect “total policing” and not just a few aspects of their functions.
While opening the Lautoka Police Station, Rabuka called on members of the Fiji Police Force to live up to the organisation’s proud history.
He told officers to live up to their motto Salus Populi.
He says service and safety of the population is what officers should remember when they put on their uniform, when they go out on beat or patrol, as the safety and security of the people of Fiji are in their hands.
He adds that this is what the people expect from them.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged the support of the vanua, conveying the Government’s appreciation to the Momo na Taukei Vidilo and the Vanua of Sukanacagi, and the Momo na Tui Vitogo, for the provision of the land where the new station is located.
Rabuka says community expectations remain high for a professional police force that operates beyond the traditional roles of policing.
He says people look to them to look after the safety and interests of the people.
He adds that people expect what is known as total policing, which goes beyond just the investigations, to go above and beyond, to serve better, as people look up to them to keep us safe.
The Prime Minister also used the opportunity to plead with traditional and society leaders to assist with policing efforts.
The new complex was completed at a cost of more than $29 million, which houses both the Western Division Headquarters and Lautoka Police Station.
