As Hindus across the country celebrate Holi with joyous singing and the vibrant exchange of colours, National Federation Party Leader, Professor Biman Prasad is reminding people not to lose sight of the deeper meaning of the festival, the enduring triumph of good over evil.
The NFP Leader says Holi carries the powerful message of truth, justice and righteousness prevailing over injustice and tyranny.
He says the festival also represents the constant upholding of equality, dignity and social justice for all people.
Professor Prasad says Holi signifies the vanquishing of demons, despots, dictators and tyrants, symbolised by the burning of Holika.
Despite being granted a boon that she could not be destroyed by fire, Holika was burned to death while the young child she tried to kill emerged unscathed because he refused to succumb to tyranny.
He says while there are many interpretations of the festival, they are all centred on the fundamental principle of good overcoming evil.
Professor Prasad also highlighted the historical significance of Holi for the Indo-Fijian community, noting that the festival has been celebrated for more than 145 years since the arrival of the Girmitiyas in May 1879.
He says the language, traditions, customs and culture practised and preserved by their forefathers remain intact and have been passed down through generations, forming the foundation of identity and belonging in Fiji.
He adds that festivals like Holi promote unity and play an important role in the social and economic advancement of the nation as Fiji continues to grow as a genuinely multi-racial, multi-cultural and multi-religious society.
Professor Prasad says the vibrancy of colours used during Holi celebrations reflects the true portrait of the nation and has wished everyone a joyous Holi and a peaceful and prosperous year ahead.
