Oceania setback motivates Vatubua to gold at Schools Championship

After missing out on a medal at the Oceania Championship earlier this month, Saint Joseph’s Secondary School swimmer Jonalese Vatubua bounced back by winning gold in the girls’ 400 metres freestyle at the National Schools Age Group Championship 2026 today.

The 18-year-old claimed victory in the heat two final, describing the achievement as a huge confidence boost for her.

Vatubua says she will continue to do better moving forward.

Despite not considering herself a long-distance swimmer, she entered the event confident that she could finish on top.

She acknowledged the support of her mother and sister, saying they continued to encourage her during difficult moments.

Vatubua also thanked her school coach, Trisa Cheer and swimming coach, Willie Elaisa, for helping her prepare for the competition.

She says training and preparation were challenging, but she happy with the result.

A total of 54 schools are competing in this year’s championship.

Marist Brothers High School are the defending champions in the boys’ division, while Drasa Avenue School hold the girls’ title.

The competition ends tomorrow.
