The official launch for the National Women in Agriculture Symposium 2026 will be held in Suva from 8th to 11th March, with the initiative described as a major step toward empowering women across Fiji’s primary industries.
Minister for Agriculture Tomasi Tunabuna says the four-day event will bring together women working in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, sugar, and artisanal industries, alongside government agencies, NGOs, development partners, and the private sector.
He says women are the backbone of Fiji’s food systems and rural economies, yet they remain underrepresented in access to land, finance, training, and technology.

Tunabuna highlighted that global research shows that closing the gender gap in agriculture boosts productivity, improves food security, and reduces poverty.
He says similar benefits can be achieved in Fiji through greater investment in women farmers, fishers, and foresters.
The symposium aligns with the Government’s Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan and the Gender in Agriculture Policy.
Tunabuna says the focus is now on turning policies into real outcomes.
For the first time, all ministries overseeing primary industries, including agriculture, fisheries, forestry, sugar, and lands, will collaborate under a whole-of-government approach to support women in the sector.

As part of the launch, the Ministry has opened Expressions of Interest for the Women in Primary Industries Awards and is calling for registrations for symposium workshops, panels, exhibitions, and field visits. Applications can be submitted online or in hard copy.
An awareness campaign has also been launched, showcasing the success stories of women who have transformed small-scale farming, fisheries, and forestry operations into profitable, sustainable ventures through climate-smart practices and market innovation.

The symposium programme will feature policy dialogues, technical and business workshops, investment pitch forums, market exhibitions, networking sessions, and site visits to women-led enterprises.
The event will conclude with the inaugural Women in Primary Industries Award Gala Night, celebrating outstanding achievements by women in the sector.
Tunabuna thanked development partners, NGOs, media sponsors, and stakeholders for their support, and invited additional partners to contribute funding, expertise, and networks to ensure the success of the symposium.

He says investing in women in agriculture is smart economics—vital for food security, climate resilience, and sustainable development.
The launch officially marks the beginning of nationwide preparations for what is expected to be a landmark event in advancing women’s economic empowerment in Fiji’s primary industries.
