The Fiji Bitter Nawaka 7s Tournament has kicked off in Nadi with an intense opening match between Nawaka and Nalawa.

Nalawa dominated the first half and led 5-0 after a strong defensive performance.

Nawaka tried to fight their way back into the match, but Nalawa maintained solid defence and extended their lead in the second half to secure a 10-0 victory.

Despite the pressure as time ran out, Nawaka continued to push hard but were unable to break Nalawa’s defensive line.

Meanwhile, Captain of the Devo Babas Rugby 7s team, Etuate Qalibau of Draiba in Navosa, says he understands that the public has been asking why the team has not featured in recent competitions.

Qalibau says several players have moved on to focus on work and family commitments.

He adds that financial challenges also contributed to the team’s absence, as securing sponsorship was difficult.

Qalibau says the team has not lost hope and is now recruiting new players as they aim to win back the title.

In another match, Kasabias Village Boys and Devo Babas Naiyasi played to a 7-all draw.

Former national representatives Ropate Rere and Daniele Yaya also featured for Devo Babas.

A number of exciting pool matches will take place this afternoon as teams battles for a place in the elimination rounds.

The elimination round will begin this afternoon, with the first match at 4.48pm featuring the Winner of Pool 1 against the fourth best third-placed team.
