The Local Government Elections will be held on one of the Saturdays this September.

In the first briefing to the Media Editors, Supervisor of Elections, Ana Mataiciwa confirms that they are now preparing for the Local Government Elections after 21 years as Cabinet has decided that the elections will be held in September.

Mataiciwa says the awareness launch will be done for the Local Government Elections next Friday, voter registration will start on the 13th of April and end on the day the Electoral Commission issues the writ of elections.

The earliest time for the issuing of the writ of the Local Government Elections is June.

This means people have about 3 months to register for the Local Government Elections.

The recruitment of election officials will take place from 13th April to 16th May.

The training of Elections Officials will take place from 27th July to 16th August.

The requirements to vote in the Local Government Elections is that you need to be registered on the National Voters Register and you need to be a resident in the Municipal Ward for 3 months.

The voting system will be first past the post which means the candidate with the most votes wins the seat.

You have to tick the number of candidates based on the number of seats in your Ward.

There are 13 Municipal Councils and 40 Wards in the country.

Mataiciwa says they are planning to have 72 polling venues.

The eligible candidates will be those contesting under a registered political party or independents.

Independents need 8 people to nominate them to be able to contest in the Municipal Elections.

141 councillors will be elected during this election.

It will be only one day of voting, and it will be a Saturday.
