Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for Artificial Intelligence to remain human-centric and focused on global good while addressing world leaders at the AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
Modi says the summit brought together representatives from more than 100 countries, along with innovators and thousands of young people, making it the largest and most democratised AI gathering in the world.
He states that Artificial Intelligence belongs in the same league as fire, writing, electricity and the internet, but cautioned that AI-driven changes can now unfold within weeks and affect the entire planet.
Modi emphasises that AI should act as a force multiplier for human intent and stressed the importance of keeping it human-centric rather than machine-centric.
He says the summit placed human well-being at the centre of global AI discussions under the principle of “Sarvajana Hitaya, Sarvajana Sukhaya,” meaning welfare for all and happiness for all.
Modi notes that technology must serve people and highlighted India’s digital public infrastructure, including UPI and COVID-19 vaccination systems, as examples of inclusive innovation.
He adds out that AI is already empowering sectors such as agriculture, security and multilingual services, with platforms providing farmers real-time guidance on weather conditions, market prices and cattle health.
Modi states that humans must not become mere data points for machines and added that AI should open new pathways of progress for the Global South.
He stresses India introduced the MANAV framework for human-centric AI governance, focusing on ethical systems, accountable governance, national sovereignty over data, accessibility and legal validity.
Modi underscored that trust is the foundation of AI’s future and called for global standards on watermarking and source verification to tackle deepfakes and disinformation.
He also says AI systems must include safeguards to protect children and promote responsible engagement.
Modi adds that India is strengthening its AI ecosystem through the India AI Mission by deploying thousands of GPUs, building a national AI repository and supporting the full technology value chain from semiconductors to startups.
He concludes that solutions developed in India can benefit humanity worldwide and encouraged the global community to design and develop in India and deliver to the world.
