The Methodist Church of Fiji has taken a bold step by launching a document called 'Veikauwaitaki' which will work together with the government to combat drugs and other social issues affecting the nation.
Speaking at the event, Methodist Church President Reverend Doctor Semisi Turagavou says something is deeply hurting the nation, the importation, sale and use of drugs, which are destroying lives.
Reverend Turagavou says drugs are breaking families, weakening parenting, and shaking the very foundation of communities.
He says at the same time, HIV and AIDS continue to threaten the country’s future, especially among young men and women.
The President says these are not distant problems ,they are here and they are among us.
He adds that as the largest Christian denomination in the country, the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma recognises that it cannot remain silent.
Meanwhile, the first Sunday of next month will mark the beginning of this journey, with a combined service involving other denominations.
Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua says this is not just the launch of a church document, but a moment of truth, the Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma standing up and saying it will not sit back while drugs and HIV threaten young people, homes and the future of the nation.
Naivalurua says that kind of clarity matters, that kind of courage matters, and that kind of leadership matters now more than ever.
He says earlier this month, leaders from different church denominations, NGOs and the Police came together for the National Pastoral Response to Drugs. He says it was more than a meeting ,it was a shift from concern to commitment, and from talk to responsibility.
