The Land Transport Authority is calling on Fijians to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant on the roads this Easter long weekend, as traffic is expected to increase significantly.
LTA Acting Chief Executive Officer Makitalena Drova says the Easter period is traditionally marked by increased travel, with families and individuals attending church services, visiting loved ones, taking part in school athletics events, or heading out for holiday getaways.
She says this also increases the risk of road accidents.
Drova says incidents during this period are often caused by speeding, fatigue, drink driving and careless behaviour, adding that most of these are preventable.
She stresses that road safety is a shared responsibility between drivers, passengers and pedestrians.
Drivers are being urged to plan their trips carefully, allow enough travel time and avoid rushing.
During the Easter period, LTA road safety education and enforcement teams will maintain a visible presence on roads and within communities to promote awareness and compliance with traffic regulations.
