The Land Transport Authority is looking at criminalising traffic offences as part of its road safety efforts.
With a 25 percent increase in road fatalities in 2025 compared to 2024, LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says they are working closely with the Fiji Police Force to ensure regulations support for the criminalisation of traffic offences.
He says, similar to overseas countries, traffic offences are not something that should be taken for granted.
Rokosawa says this is something that the LTA, together with key stakeholders, the line ministry, the Fiji Police Force and the Secretary-General’s Office, are working towards.
He highlighted that they are also embarking on the introduction of demerit points.
The CEO says currently the power to issue demerit points lies with the Magistrates Court, but they want to revise the regulations and ensure that the Land Transport Authority has the legal mandate to issue demerit points.
He says at the moment, their current process involves calling frequent offenders for show-cause, and at times, they do sympathise with offenders.
According to Rokosawa, 83 road fatalities were recorded by LTA in 2025, compared to 66 in 2024.
