Access to reliable mobile and digital connectivity is set to transform lives of people living in the remote Lau Group, following the signing of a landmark Universal Service Obligation contract between Digicel Fiji and the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji.
The agreement marks a major step towards achieving Fiji’s national goal of universal digital access, bringing essential telecommunications services to communities that have historically remained beyond the reach of traditional networks.
Under the contract, Digicel Fiji will deploy robust mobile and digital infrastructure across the Lau Group, including the integration of government-led satellite Wi-Fi services using Starlink technology.
This approach is designed to overcome geographical challenges and ensure more comprehensive and reliable coverage for remote and maritime communities.
Chairman of the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji Board, David Eyre, says universal connectivity is a cornerstone of inclusive social and economic development and a key objective of the Government’s national digital agenda.
Eyre says through the industry-funded Universal Service Fund, administered by TAF under government policy, remote communities are now being connected to digital markets, essential services and new opportunities that were previously out of reach.
Eyre says the deployment in the Lau Group will support economic participation, entrepreneurship and improved access to vital services for households and businesses, regardless of their location or circumstances.
He adds that TAF acknowledges Digicel Fiji’s role in delivering connectivity under the USF programme and remains committed to ensuring no community is left behind, irrespective of geography or remoteness.
Digicel Fiji Chief Executive Officer, Farid Mohammed, says the company is proud to play a role in expanding connectivity to the Lau Group, describing the project as a significant leap towards ensuring nationwide mobile coverage.
Mohammed says leaving no one behind is central to building Fiji’s digital future and empowering communities through access to technology.
The project is being delivered through close collaboration between Digicel Fiji, the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji and the Ministry of Finance, with a strong focus on deploying technology that is suitable for Fiji’s unique and remote geography.
Mohammed says expanding communications services in underserved communities will unlock access to digital tools that drive economic growth, improve healthcare access, enhance educational opportunities and promote financial inclusion for thousands of Fijians.
He adds that Digicel Fiji looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Government and the regulator to turn the vision of universal connectivity into reality.
