Fiji Airports has confirmed that runway strengthening works and the construction of a new terminal at Labasa Airport are progressing as planned, despite reports in The Fiji Times suggesting otherwise.
The company says the airport will temporarily close from the 16th of February to the 27th of March to allow for essential runway pavement strengthening works.
Fiji Airports has coordinated with Fiji Airways (Fiji Link) and Northern Air to maintain air connectivity during the closure period.
Fiji Airports CEO Mesake Nawari emphasised that the closure is necessary to ensure long-term safety and compliance with international aviation standards.
Nawari says that to minimise disruption, Fiji Airways will operate 44 additional flights to and from Savusavu Airport, while Northern Air will operate two daily flights on the same route throughout the closure period.
He adds that bus services will continue as usual, and passengers with direct hotel bookings will be provided with minibus pick-up schedules.
The runway strengthening project is funded under the Fiji Tourism Development Program in Vanua Levu (Na Vualiku Project), with support from the World Bank.
