Women in construction and trade are not the exception, they are leaders, experts and nation builders in their own right.
This was the powerful message delivered during the launch of the Women in Construction and Trade Fiji (WICAT) website in Suva, as Women in Construction Week 2026 was officially marked.
Minister for Women Sashi Kiran praised WICAT for growing from a small collective formed in 2021 into a national movement supporting hundreds of tradeswomen, engineers, architects, project managers, contractors, suppliers, consultants and entrepreneurs across Fiji.
Kiran says the platform has created a vital space where women in construction are visible, valued and connected, particularly in what remains a largely male-dominated industry.
Reflecting on previous engagements with members, she acknowledged that many women had once felt disheartened and isolated in their respective fields.
She commends the network for standing together, strengthening skills, building confidence and turning advocacy into economic empowerment.
The Minister also noted that through partnerships with government, industry and development partners, WICAT has helped members secure contracts, referrals and new opportunities.
Kiran highlighted the importance of changing public perceptions of leadership, stressing that women leaders are not confined to executive offices or Parliament.
She says leadership is in every space and form, and women in construction, trade and infrastructure must be seen and recognised in the same way as those in traditional leadership roles.
The Minister expressed hope that the website would open new doors, spark partnerships and elevate the voices of women building Fiji’s future.
