Fiji Corrections Services correctional facilities currently lack the infrastructure necessary to provide adequate HIV treatment, and this challenge is compounded by limited expertise and resources to effectively manage the growing number of inmates struggling with drug addiction and those living with HIV.
This was shared by the Acting Commissioner of Corrections, Auta Moceisuva during today's press conference held at their Headquarters.
Moceisuva says with the support of the Ministry of Health, the United Nations agencies, and the Diplomatic Corps, they are actively seeking funding opportunities and specialized training to strengthen our efforts in combating drug abuse and HIV.
He says these circumstances place significant pressure on their frontline officers, and many individuals admitted to their facilities arrive in poor physical and mental condition due to prolonged drug use.
The Acting Commissioner says some present with violent behavior, others with severe health complications, including HIV infection, requiring immediate and specialized care.
He adds that they are currently in discussions with relevant authorities regarding the establishment of a dedicated facility to better manage and rehabilitate this category of offenders, ideally with support from an overseas donor.
Moceisuva says at the same time, they are engaging with the Judiciary to explore expedited trial processes for this group and extended stays in remand centres can be detrimental both to the individuals concerned and to the broader inmate population, making timely case resolution a priority.
