More than a hundred people gathered at the India House in Suva this morning to celebrate India’s 77th Republic Day, commemorating the adoption of the Indian Constitution on January 26, 1950.
The event also included the unfurling of the Indian national flag, cultural performances, and patriotic speeches.
Speaking at the celebrations, Indian High Commissioner to Fiji, Suneet Mehta, says today is a reminder of the Constitution, which gives pride and dignity to people of India, both in the country and abroad.
He also delivered a message from the President of India, Droupadi Murmu who expressed hope that Republic Day would bring happiness, peace, and prosperity to people and their families.
The High Commissioner says that it is a matter of pride that India is developing in infrastructure, the digital market, health, defence, renewable energy, climate change, and various other sectors.
He also acknowledged the Girmityas who came to Fiji and have made a significant contribution towards the development of the Indian and Indo-Fijian community.
Mehta extended his best wishes to Indians and people of Indian origin in Fiji and across the world, wishing everyone a very Happy Republic Day.
