Those responsible for illegal dumping of fish waste along Namosi Road will be issued a non-compliance notice, and further enforcement will proceed under Section 45 of the Environment Management Act 2005.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya says this conduct is unacceptable and illegal dumping affects public health, harms the environment and undermines responsible operators.
She warns they will not hesitate to act.
Tabuya says the dumping is linked to a processing facility operating in Walu Bay and a joint inspection confirmed the company was operating without a valid Waste Disposal Permit and had used an unlicensed transporter.
She says after being refused entry at Naboro Landfill due to improperly packaged waste, the same vehicle unlawfully dumped the waste along the roadside.
The Minister confirms the waste has since been recovered and properly disposed of at Naboro by a licensed operator.
She stresses businesses are legally required to hold valid waste permits for the management of waste and use licensed waste transport operators.
Tabuya also says they are in the process of reviewing litter laws with tougher penalties and criminal liability by corporations.
The Ministry is reminding all operators that environmental compliance is mandatory and breaches will attract firm enforcement.
They add protecting our environment is not optional, it is the law.
