Habitat Fiji and HART partner to upgrade Valelevu Hart Home

Habitat Fiji and HART partner to upgrade Valelevu Hart Home

With the housing and care needs of Fiji’s ageing population continuing to grow, Habitat for Humanity Fiji and the Housing Assistance Relief Trust (HART) have entered into a Memorandum of Agreement to upgrade and revitalise the Valelevu Hart Home, a residential care facility for senior citizens in Valelevu, Suva.

Interim National Director at Habitat for Humanity Fiji, Sangita Kumar says that as Fiji’s population continues to age, the need for safe, accessible, and supportive housing for senior citizens is becoming increasingly urgent.

She says this collaboration with HART demonstrates how partnerships can deliver sustainable, people-centred solutions that improve quality of life while strengthening community care systems.

She adds that, together, they are creating an inclusive living environment where senior citizens can age with dignity and security.

Habitat Fiji says that through this collaboration, it will provide technical expertise and construction support to improve living conditions and adapt existing infrastructure to meet the specialised needs of elderly persons.

They say that investing in dignified ageing reduces vulnerability, strengthens families, preserves community knowledge, and reinforces inclusive development, ensuring no one is left behind.

They add that the HART Housing Community has a strong history of supporting vulnerable families and continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community.

Habitat Fiji says apartment units will be improved with universal design features, including wider doorways, low-height counters, grab bars, and safer bathroom layouts, creating a secure, inclusive, and dignified living environment for older persons.

They say that dedicated staff quarters will also be upgraded to enable on-site support, strengthen facility management, and ensure timely care for residents.

They add that shared spaces will be enhanced to promote safety, wellbeing, and social connection within the community.
