Former People’s Alliance Women’s President Titilia Saurara says she will file a complaint with the Fijian Elections Office regarding what she claims was an unconstitutional People's Alliance Women's Wing Special General Meeting last Saturday.
Despite her objections, the SGM went ahead at the Suva Civic Centre, where Bulou Elenoa Vakalalabure-Senikuba was elected unopposed as the new President of the PAP Women’s Wing.
Saurara is challenging the legitimacy of the meeting.
She claims she was not informed about the meeting and only became aware of it through social media, which she says was a breach of the party’s constitution.
According to Saurara, the constitution states that the women’s committee is responsible for organising its own Annual or Special General Meetings, while the PAP Secretariat is only meant to facilitate the process.
She also claims the SGM should have been held before the party’s Annual General Assembly, a requirement she says was not met.
Saurara says she did not attend the meeting because she believed it was unconstitutional.
She adds that her attempts to communicate with the General Secretary, Sila Balawa were unsuccessful.
Saurara says she had initially proposed holding the women’s SGM on 24th January but received no response, and later saw the public notice posted on Facebook.
She has also raised concerns about internal party governance, claiming the role of treasurer remains unfilled and alleging the General Secretary has overstepped constitutional boundaries in managing meetings.
Meanwhile party officials say the meeting was well attended, and the SGM was necessary to ensure women’s representation in upcoming party processes.
Vakalalabure-Senikuba, who previously served as the Western Division Secretary, says she was encouraged by the turnout and looks forward to leading the women’s wing.
The People’s Alliance is yet to comment.
