Concerned residents of Naria in Rakiraki are calling for an urgent survey to address flooding issues that occur during heavy rain due to blocked drains.
A concerned resident highlights that the area is frequently affected during downpours, with floodwaters entering their homes adding, this has been a long-standing issue for about five years, with no action taken despite raising the matter with several authorities.
The resident, a father of two, says he feels vulnerable when floodwaters enter his home, adding that it poses a safety risk for his family.
He is requesting the relevant authorities to visit their neighbourhood, carry out a proper survey, and resolve the drainage problem.
Meanwhile, Rakiraki Town Special Administrator Peni Duaniwai stresses that the council is working in collaboration with other government agencies, especially the provincial office, in assessing the damages.
He adds that there are proper channels to raise concerns, and discussions are needed to address the issue.
He further explains that drains also require alignment, adding that a team from Japan has completed their assessment and will be working on the alignment of the drains.
Duaniwai also emphasises that members of the public should take civic pride, act responsibly, and stop dumping rubbish, which often causes drain blockages
