Fijians in Savusavu raise concerns over proposed EFL tariff increase

Fijians in Savusavu raise concerns over proposed EFL tariff increase

More Fijians in Savusavu are raising concerns about the proposed EFL tariff increase, highlighting its negative effects on them.

Savusavu market vendor Sambhu Lal told fijivillage News that he is not happy with the proposed tariff hike, calling it a major threat to all Fijians.

Lal emphasised that the increase would affect every household, including farmers and business owners, due to the rise in prices to cover additional costs.

He is urging the government to carefully consider the people, especially those who are already struggling with inflation.

Lal claims that approximately 90 percent of vendors in Savusavu were unaware of the consultations taking place, which is why they did not participate.

He is requesting the relevant authorities to conduct more detailed consultations, where the information is explained in a simple and easy-to-understand manner.

Savusavu Vihana’s Variety Shop owner Sheenal Dutt says she was not aware of the consultations and is calling on the FCCC to conduct it properly and inclusively.

Dutt says if the tariff increases, she will unfortunately have to raise the prices of goods, which will impact customers, and is urging that the tariff remains unchanged.

Meanwhile, FNU student Rekansha Chand says a tariff increase would mean her savings would go towards paying electricity bills, restricting her budget for essential study supplies.
