Fiji will host the COP31 Pre-COP meeting from October 5th to 8th this year, marking a significant step in preparations for next year’s negotiations.
The announcement was made by Minister for Information, Lynda Tabuya, during the Third Pacific Climate Change Ministers Meeting in Brisbane.
The Minister confirmed that Fiji is coordinating closely with Tuvalu on the event.
The Pre-COP meeting has been strategically scheduled following the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly and ahead of the World Bank Annual Meetings.
This timing is expected to boost ministerial participation and build political momentum ahead of COP31.
In a departure from traditional formats, Fiji has proposed an extended three-and-a-half-day programme under the Ministerial Talanoa framework.
The design reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and the Pacific region’s push for practical, solutions-driven outcomes.
A key feature of the programme will be a Leaders’ segment lasting one and a half days, with part of the discussions to be hosted in Tuvalu, which aims to elevate political leadership and provide clear direction during a critical phase of the COP31 process.
The programme will also include structured technical discussions on priority climate issues, ensuring alignment between political ambition and technical progress, and this integrated approach will support consensus-building across key thematic areas.
Tabuya noted strong interest from indigenous groups, civil society organisations, and the private sector.
She says the structure will create space for inclusive participation, consistent with United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change practices, while maintaining the integrity of Party-led discussions.
Fiji has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with all parties and stakeholders to refine the programme and deliver meaningful outcomes, reflecting the urgency of global climate action and shared international responsibility.
