Fiji entered a new chapter of digital transformation today as Telecom Fiji Limited officially launched its 5G network, an advancement expected to redefine how Fijians live, work, communicate and access essential services.
Speaking at the launch at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, Telecom Fiji Limited CEO, Charles Goundar emphasised that this milestone will accelerate connectivity, innovation and economic opportunity across the country.
He thanked the government, especially the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs and Communications, for its leadership in enabling the move through the issuance of 5G spectrum licences.
Goundar says the 5G deployment will be rolled out in two carefully planned phases.
He says Phase One will bring coverage to Suva, Nadi, Denarau and Lautoka, prioritising high-need areas and essential services, adding that the phase has been extended to include Navua, Nausori and Nasinu.
He says Phase Two will see 5G progressively expanded to additional towns and regions across Fiji.
Goundar says Telecom Fiji’s teams have worked tirelessly in recent months on equipment deployment, system integration and rigorous testing.
He says the results have been exceptional and that the 5G network will deliver a powerful and truly transformative experience to customers and communities.
He adds that with this launch, the country is stepping confidently into a future where connectivity is instantaneous, secure and limitless.
The CEO says their mission is to invest in critical infrastructure that secures Fiji’s digital future and unlocks opportunities for generations to come.
Minister for Communications, Ioane Naivalarua says the 5G launch is not just about faster speeds; it represents a shift in how Fiji will operate, innovate and grow in the decades ahead.
He highlighted the evolution of connectivity in Fiji, from early mobile networks to 4G, adding that 5G now introduces a new level of capability, efficiency and reliability.
He emphasised that the launch aligns with the Government’s National Digital Strategy and Fiji’s long-term digital transformation goals.
Naivalarua says the rollout of 5G will play a vital role in reducing the digital divide and improving access to online education, healthcare, government services and economic opportunities.
He says enhanced connectivity will strengthen national security and emergency response, supporting real-time communication and coordination during disasters.
The Minister says these advancements show Fiji’s strong commitment to building a digitally inclusive, resilient and adaptive nation.
He encouraged young Fijians, entrepreneurs and developers to take full advantage of 5G’s capabilities to drive innovation in education, health, industry, governance and economic development.
