Four new advanced X-ray machines at Nadi and Nausori International Airports, reinforcing its border security with the commissioning of significantly enhancing the country’s ability to detect biosecurity and border risks.
The initiative, led by the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways in partnership with the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji, demonstrates the Government’s commitment to protecting the country from harmful pests, diseases, illegal trade, drugs and other prohibited items.
Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Honourable Tomasi Tunabuna, says the new technology strengthens screening capabilities by providing faster, more accurate and non-intrusive detection, while ensuring efficient passenger processing.
He adds that with increasing international travel and trade, Fiji’s borders are facing greater pressure.
Tunabuna says the X-ray machines ensure Fiji remains vigilant and well-prepared to protect the environment, industries and communities.
Biosecurity Authority of Fiji Acting Chief Executive Officer, Surend Pratap, says the enhanced systems significantly improve frontline enforcement.
He says the initiative benefits from close collaboration with partner agencies, including the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, Fiji Airports and the Fiji Police Force.
Travellers are reminded that Fiji’s screening capabilities are now more robust than ever.
Pratap says all passengers must truthfully declare food items, plant materials, animal products and any restricted or prohibited goods upon arrival.
He adds that failure to declare such items may result in seizure, fines or prosecution under Fiji law.
