Laughter, conversation, and camaraderie filled the Australian High Commissioner’s residence in Suva, as guests celebrated Australian Day and the strong vuvale ties between Fiji and Australia.
The event brought together members of parliament, senior officials, the diplomatic corps, the Fiji–Australian business community, and friends of the bilateral partnership.
Australian High Commissioner Peter Roberts highlighted that at the heart of the relationship is the affinity between the two countries.
He says the two countries share many values and a long history, adding that they like so many of the same things, work with each other, and support each other.
He also shared that his family feels at home in Fiji.
Roberts highlighted the trust and cooperation between the two nations, particularly in defence.
He recalled travelling to Australia last year with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and other ministers, where they observed the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces contingent participating in Exercise Talisman Sabre, Australia’s largest defence exercise.
He described the collaboration between Fijian and Australian soldiers as the ultimate expression of trust and partnership.
He adds that the nations’ defence systems are increasingly interoperable and that personnel are embedded in each other’s systems.
The High Commissioner also celebrated the countries’ economic and cultural ties, saying that last year, two-way trade amounted to AUD 4.4 billion, approximately FJD 6.5 billion, with a significant surplus for Fiji.
He says it makes sense for Australia and Fiji to be more economically integrated, for our systems to connect and work together, and to build supply chains that provide economic security for both countries.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who was unable to attend, extended his good wishes to the Australian High Commission.
In a message read at the event, he highlighted the historic significance of the day and praised the enduring Fiji–Australia relationship.
He says the government of Fiji stands shoulder to shoulder with Australia in celebrating another year of its nation’s journey, enriched by the strength and diversity of its society and people.
The Prime Minister extended his wishes for the continued health, happiness, and prosperity of the government and people of Australia.
