Farmers’ organisations from across Fiji met in Suva recently to strengthen their plans for supporting farmers and helping the country’s agriculture sector grow.
The annual planning workshop, organised by the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council, brought together representatives of 23 national farmers’ organisations to develop their budget submissions and priorities for the 2026–2027 financial year and long-term strategic plan for four years (2027-2030).
Agriculture remains one of Fiji’s most important sectors, providing livelihoods for more than 80,000 farmers and rural families, yet many farmers still operate at subsistence level, limiting opportunities to increase income and productivity.
Chief Executive Officer of the Fiji Crop and Livestock Council, Jiu Daunivalu says strengthening farmers’ organisations is critical to helping farmers transition towards sustainable commercial agriculture.
Daunivalu says through practical planning exercises they have been supporting farmers, and identifying real-life priorities, to help ensure that increased investment and effective service delivery are targeted, that would successfully support farmers and strengthen the sector.
She adds that it is critical that Government actively engages with farmers’ organisations, farmers and supporters in the agricultural supply chain, in order to better operationalise agricultural policies that are already in place.
