A family is still in shock after a waterspout destroyed the roof of their three bedroom home along the coastline of Korolevu, Sigatoka at around midday today.

Desmond Patrick Simione Raicava Dass says they were doing some pipe works around the area when they felt the first wind.

He says a small gust first formed near the beach, followed by a much larger one that developed from the reef and moved towards the house.

While speaking to fijivillage News, Dass says the family managed to run inside the home before it hit, but the house has been badly damaged, with half of it destroyed and the roof torn off, leaving rain pouring inside.

He says they saw another water spout form but he does not know which way it went.

Dass, who works as a driver, says he lives with his wife and retired uncle

He says luckily, his wife was at work at the time of the incident.

He says they will be spending the night in a small corner of the house that they will set up.

Dass says the damage is devastating, with repair costs expected to exceed $15,000.

He says any assistance, no matter how small, would mean a great deal to him and his family.

Anyone willing to help can contact Dass on 9785207.

Meanwhile, the Nadi Weather Office says it is an isolated event and the water spout have dissipated.

The Office says favourable conditions during a thunderstorm can form a water spout.
