Dr Maharaj raises concern over excessive kava consumption contributing to stress

With the festive season in full swing, serious concerns are being raised about the overconsumption of kava, which is contributing to people’s stress.

Former President of the Fiji College of General Practitioners and General Practitioner with a special interest in NCDs, Child Health and Natural Medicine, Doctor Rajesh Maharaj says excessive stress is harmful to the body as it contributes to inflammation and unhealthy eating habits.

While speaking on fijivillage Straight Talk with Vijay Narayan on the issue of stress, Dr Maharaj says in Fiji, people waste a lot of time around the grog bowl, which results in them not eating healthy meals and not getting enough rest.

Dr Maharaj highlighted that it is disheartening that people are turning up for family gatherings mainly for grog sessions that last until 2am or 3am.

Dr Maharaj stresses that there is a need for change, as sleep deprivation is dangerous for people.

He also highlighted that due to the excessive consumption of kava, people are not well prepared for work, and land is left idle, resulting in low production of natural, healthy foods.

The doctor is urging people to reduce kava consumption and spend more time with their family.
