More than 300 residents of Bila Settlement in Martintar, Nadi are calling for urgent government intervention following severe damage to roads and drainage systems in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Urmil.
Community spokesperson Vineel Nand says living conditions have deteriorated significantly since the heavy rains associated with the cyclone, with infrastructure in the area failing under pressure.
Nand says roads that were completed just eight months ago are already in poor condition, with potholes, surface erosion and waterlogged sections posing risks to both drivers and pedestrians.
He says they are disappointed that the newly constructed road has deteriorated so quickly, and the current situation is damaging vehicles and making it extremely difficult for students and working people to access the main public road.
He says large sections of nearby sugarcane fields remain flooded, while blocked drains have worsened water retention throughout the settlement.
Nand says the drainage systems urgently need to be cleared and upgraded to prevent further flooding.
He says parents have also raised concerns about children having no safe walking access to bus stops and the main road, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall.
Working residents are also struggling with daily commuting challenges as sections of the road remain muddy and uneven.
He adds that the community has appealed to the relevant authorities for immediate drainage clearing, proper road rehabilitation and a comprehensive assessment of flood mitigation measures to prevent recurring damage.
Residents have also expressed concern that they are yet to receive a visit from their advisory councillor following the cyclone’s impact, raising questions within the community about representation and responsiveness to local concerns.
Nand says the community remains hopeful that government officials will soon conduct an on-site assessment.
He says they are not asking for special treatment, but simply for safe roads, proper drainage and basic access for their people.
We have sent questions to the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways.
They are yet to respond.
