Athletics Fiji has released its 2026 Competition Calendar, officially launching what is expected to be a major year for the sport with a strong focus on international competition.

This was shared by Athletics President Fiji Joji Liga.

Liga says the season begins next Saturday, January 17, with the first sanctioned meet at the HFC Bank Stadium, giving athletes, coaches, and officials an early opportunity to assess form ahead of a busy year.

He says the 2026 season is a crucial one for Athletics Fiji as preparations intensify for a demanding international schedule, headlined by the 2026 Oceania Championships in Darwin, Australia.

The President for Athletics Fiji says the national team for the Oceania Championships is expected to be named by the end of February, with selection events over the coming weeks playing a key role as athletes aim to meet qualifying standards and secure national selection.

He says the calendar also includes several major global events, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Oregon, and the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, and these events are expected to provide valuable international exposure for Fiji’s senior, junior, and emerging athletes as they progress through the high-performance pathway.

Liga adds that selection criteria for the various games and championships will be circulated at a later date.

He says on the domestic front, the Fiji Secondary Schools’ Coca-Cola Championships, scheduled for late April, remains a key highlight on the calendar and continues to play a central role in identifying and developing school-based talent.

Liga says the season will conclude with the Primary Schools’ Championships, reinforcing Athletics Fiji’s commitment to grassroots participation and long-term athlete development.

Athletics Fiji also confirms that the 2026 season will be used to build momentum towards the 2027 Pacific Games in Tahiti, following groundwork laid during the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

The focus this year will be on strengthening athlete pathways, improving performance consistency and increasing competition exposure across all levels.

Athletics Fiji is encouraging athletes, coaches, schools and clubs to fully engage with the 2026 calendar as the sport continues to grow nationwide.
