Following recent road accidents and reckless driving behaviours among Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers, the National Joint Enforcement Joint Order between the Land Transport Authority and the Fiji Police Force will begin today until 31st July, focusing on safety and compliance.
LTA says they will focus on PSV conditions and driver code of conduct, namely minivans, taxis, buses, and carriers transporting passengers across the country.
LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa says the joint operation was designed to enhance road safety and adherence to traffic regulations.
He says dangerous and careless driving has become a serious concern, with passengers’ safety increasingly at risk due to erratic and negligent behaviour on the roads.
Rokosawa says this nationwide enforcement operation is a critical step to restoring order and discipline on the roads, particularly among PSV operators who bear a significant responsibility to uphold the highest safety standards.
The CEO says every Fijian deserves to travel safely on PSVs.
He says operation would be executed through checkpoints, random vehicle inspections, and mobile patrols, with emphasis on high-risk areas in the Central-Eastern, Western, and Northern Divisions.
Rokosawa says they are directing resources to areas where repeated instances of non-compliance with road safety standards have been observed.
He says the Authority is working closely with the Fiji Police to ensure that these issues are dealt with decisively and consistently and most importantly, ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users.
The CEO stresses it was vital for PSV drivers to understand the importance of this serious intervention as there would be zero tolerance for negligence and reckless driving behaviours deemed a risk to public safety.
He says the safety of the public must be priority, and drivers must uphold the law to prevent endangering passengers’ lives.
Rokosawa says this is no longer business as usual and negligence and reckless behaviours on the road will not be tolerated.
He says public safety must be placed above all else, and they will not allow irresponsible drivers to risk lives.
Rokosawa also stresses that compliance with road regulations is not optional—it is the law.
The CEO says they will continue to bring drivers to task through their show-cause proceedings that could result in the suspension or cancellation of their licence.
Rokosawa reminded the PSV operators of their duty of care toward every passenger they transport.
He says the responsibility placed on PSV drivers is immense as every time someone boards a PSV, they are placing their trust in the driver’s hands.
He says this trust carries a significant responsibility and drivers must honour this trust by adhering to the law, driving safely, and prioritizing the welfare of passengers.
Rokosawa further emphasized that the operation is not solely about enforcement but also aims to educate and prevent future violations.
He also expressed appreciation to members of the public for reporting instances of reckless driving behaviours via social media and through the Authority's official complaints platforms.
