Jordan Serevi, a student of Yat Sen Secondary School in Fiji, has made it to the top 15 in the Chinese Bridge Competition for foreign secondary students, currently being held in China.
Speaking to fijivillage News, Head of Chinese Studies in Yat Sen ,Sally Deng says that Serevi has shown a strong passion and talent for learning Chinese and even during the two weeks of school holidays he sacrificed and spent time with their Chinese language teacher in school to learn more about Mandarin.
Deng says he first won a Chinese speech competition in primary school for the Fiji region, but due to COVID-19, he competed online instead of travelling to China.
She says unlike many students, he confidently speaks Chinese whenever he has the chance, even if he makes mistakes, which has helped him improve his skills.
Deng adds learning Chinese provides lifelong benefits and greater opportunities in the future, emphasizing that with effort and dedication, anyone can succeed regardless of their background.
She adds Serevi will be back in Fiji on Monday.
