Ranjani Devi, the wife of Salesh Chand who was murdered in Lautoka almost nine years ago has welcomed the Fiji Police Force’s decision to establish a special unit to look into cold cases.

Chand’s body was found in his burnt company vehicle at the Fiji Sugar Corporation mill yard in Lautoka at about 2.45am on the 8th of June, 2016.

Police earlier stated that officers on patrol saw flames and when they went inside the mill yard to check, they found the body.

Devi says she is glad that the Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu will form a special unit consisting of former police officers to look into the cold cases.

She says she has been saying for some time now that the police force needs to get the retired experienced police detectives to look into her husband’s unsolved murder.

Devi says detectives have not been able to find any clue into her husband’s murder.

She says a few years ago, the case file was moved from Lautoka to the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Suva for reasons best known to police, however, this case remains unsolved.

Devi adds that she is hopeful that the special unit would be able to make a breakthrough not only in her husband’s unsolved murder but also in other unsolved cases.

Devi is currently residing in New Zealand.
