Waste Recyclers Fiji Director and CEO Amitesh Deo says they are at planning stages of conducting a feasibility study on how they can establish networking with outer islands in order to bring the recyclables back to the mainland.

He says they are working with other key agencies to establish a Hub and Spoke model which will connect outer islands to mainland with the purpose of netting recyclables from smaller islands where there is currently no waste management system.

Deo says this particular project has been in the pipeline for some years now and got further deferred due to COVID-19 and its related restrictions.

He says certain recyclables will be up-cycled to finished or semi-finished products on the islands before being transferred to the mainland and this may also create economic benefits for the islands and its people.

Work on the Hub and Spoke model feasibility is scheduled to start in early May.
