The Bula Boys depart tonight for Bangkok to face Thailand in the opening match of the 51st King’s Cup Challenge, with Rewa FC’s Tevita Waranivalu named as captain of the squad.
Waranivalu takes over the captaincy from former skipper Roy Krishna, who is sidelined due to injury.
He says being chosen as captain is one of the greatest honours of his life and wearing this armband is not just about leading the players on the field but about representing every Fijian who believes in them.
He says when the team walks onto the field in Thailand, they carry more than just a ball and a jersey, they carry the hopes of the nation.
Coach Marika Rodu emphasised that the tournament is not only about results but also a chance to test the team’s depth.
He says the team will be facing quality teams in Thailand, and this will test their preparation as well as allow young players to measure themselves at a higher level.
Rodu also stressed the importance of discipline and teamwork, saying they may not have the resources of bigger nations, but what they do have is heart, and if they remain disciplined, stick to their structure, and trust each other, they can surprise anyone.
The squad includes Jitoka Vulaca, Joela Biuvanua, Isikeli Sevanaia, Gabrieli Matanisiga, Patrick Joseph, Simione Nabenu, Mohammed Ayman, Sterling Vasconcellos, Ilisoni Logaivou, Samuela Navoce, Waranivalu, Malakai Lavacake, Penisoni Tirau, Thomas Dunn, Epeli Valevou, Rusiati Doidoi, Etonia Dogalau, Shazil Ali, Christopher Wasasala, Setareki Hughes, and Sitiveni Rakai.
Fiji will face Thailand at 1am Friday.
