Minister for Environment and Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy says there is continuous flooding in Wailevu in Labasa because the area is below sea level and people continue to dump their rubbish in drains.

He made the comment during a Talanoa Session in Labasa.

Several people from the area highlighted that their farms and homes have been flooded due to the lack of dredging works done by the Ministry.

The Minister says the continuous littering by people in drains is still an issue the Ministry is facing as this sometimes makes it harder for them to clean the drains once every year.

Dr Reddy says currently they are using three dredging machines and they are expecting another one by the end of the year.

He says in terms of drainage the Ministry has used $91,000 in drainage works in Wailevu from 2018 to 2019.

The Minister adds that they will only construct the main drains and farmers will need to do their infill drainage.
