Water Authority of Fiji says despite the unplanned power disruption today, all their plants in the Central Division remain operational through generator sets.

WAF CEO, Dr. Amit Chanan says unplanned electricity disruptions have previously had a significant impact on WAF’s ability to maintain its operations.

He says through the 2021-2022 Fijian National Budget, they have been able to award a new contract for generator sets as emergency backup for their plants.

Dr. Chanan says the funding ensures WAF plants can operate during major electricity disruptions, building resilience of the water supply system.

He further says with the challenges of aging infrastructure combined with increased population growth in the Suva and Nausori corridor, they are taking a strategic approach to ensure water reaches all Fijians.

WAF’s CEO says until the Viria Treatment Plant comes online, water demands of the rapidly increasing urban population greatly outnumbers their supply, and this is why they have intermittent supply areas to ration and ensure no Fijian is left behind.
