The newly-commissioned Vunidawa multipurpose court is set to promote physical health, combat non-communicable diseases and keep young people distracted from illegal activities.

While acknowledging the Government’s support in the construction and funding of the new multipurpose court, Matailobau Vesikula Village Youth Club member Ateca Sikonatuidali says the multipurpose court will allow her fellow youth club members to stay fit and enjoy various sports.

She says it also contributes towards skills development because a lot of youth have skills in sports, and now, they can showcase their talent even more.

Sikonatuidali says the court would help youth choose the right path in life and stay away from indulging in illegal activities.

She adds youth nowadays are taking drugs, but they are talented, and this is where they can come to showcase their talents and skills in sports.

Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru says the facility was a testament to the Government’s commitment to empowering the youth and fostering unity through sports and development.

He says they are fulfilling the Naitasiri Provincial Council’s request from 2020, where the court was constructed by the Department of Public Works Central and Eastern Division at a cost of $169,000.

Saukuru says today, they have witnessed the realisation of this vision, an investment not only in infrastructure but in the dreams and aspirations of our youth.

The Minister says it is a very memorable one because Naitasiri has been developing some very good sportsmen in terms of rugby and netball, and for the government to come and invest in this court, is a big plus for Naitasiri.

He adds the construction of this multipurpose court is one of many initiatives we are pursuing to build stronger, more resilient communities.
