The launching of Constitution Day for America’s 250th Independence anniversary commenced at the American Corner in Suva.
United States Ambassador, Marie Damour, highlighted that the U.S. Embassy’s America 250 will be a year-long celebration marking the anniversary of the United States independence.
She emphasizes that a constitution is a charter of freedom, a blueprint for democracy, and a testament to the belief that government derives its power from the consent of the governed.
Damour further says that democracy is not a spectator sport, stating it requires the active involvement of all citizens, and that freedom often demands hard work and dedication. She encouraged everyone to reflect on these principles, both as individuals and as communities, to contribute towards the ideals of democracy, equality, and freedom.
The launch also featured activities and exhibition showcasing the ratification of the Constitution, the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and a collection of pictures and books, including Encyclopedia, The Presidents, and The State House.
Fijians are encouraged to visit the American Corner and learn more about United States constitution and its history.
