Dubai 7s: Fijiana reach semis despite NZ loss

The Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s side will play Australia in the Cup semifinals at 9.34 tonight even though they lost 31-12 to New Zealand in their last pool game.

They were not only outscored but outpaced and outmuscled by the Black Ferns 7s side who imposed their dominance from the opening whistle.

Lavena Cavuru and Reapi Ulunisau scored for Fiji with Cavuru adding a conversion.

Stacey Waaka, Jazmin Felix-Hotham, Kelsey Teneti and Jorja Miller who scored a double ensured New Zealand also reached the semifinal, as they had lost 21-17 earlier to the USA.

The Fijiana won their first two games, taking down France 28-19 and beating the USA 19-7.

New Zealand will play Japan in the first Cup semi final at 9.12pm.

The women's cup final kicks off at 3.35am tomorrow.

In other games, the USA beat France 27-14, Japan edge Canada 21-19.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Men’s 7s defeated Argentina 26-19 before dispatching South Africa 28-10, they went down 24-19 to France.

The men’s semifinals will begin at 10.06pm tonight with France playing Australia, with Fiji to play New Zealand at 10.28 tonight.

The Men's Cup final is set for 4.11am tomorrow.
