Two structural fire reports were received by the National Fire Authority of Fiji in the last 24 hours and both incidents happened in the Western division.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Sowane Puamau says the first report was received from Saweni, Lautoka at 12.02am yesterday, and they immediately responded to the call.

He says their team arrived at the scene at 12.13 am and started to put out the fire.

Puamau says the owner of the house was at home when the fire started as he arrived at his home at 9pm and he cooked dinner.

He adds the owner fell asleep soon after, and they are suspecting that unattended cooking is the cause of the fire.

There were no casualties.

The CEO says the second incident was in Sorokoba Village at 2.54am yesterday.

He says the home was occupied by two elderly ladies, who were out visiting relatives at Sasa Village when the fire started.

Puamau says their station in Ba received the report from the Ba Police Station, and they immediately responded.

He adds when their team arrived at the scene, the house was fully engulfed in flames, and they quickly tried to put out the fire.

He is urging members of the public to be vigilant and attentive in and around their homes during this festive season.

The CEO says people should consume kava and alcohol moderately and avoid cooking, whilst under the influence of liquid and kava.
