Two men who assaulted and robbed an elderly man of $500 cash and other assorted items in Nadawa in 2018 have been given suspended sentences by Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge in the Suva High Court.

22-year-old Mateo Masikau and 19-year-old Ledua Jiujiuwa pleaded guilty to one count each of aggravated robbery.

They assaulted the 64-year-old man and robbed him as he waited for the bus on the morning of 25th October 2018.

There were no serious injuries to the victim.

In his sentence, Justice Aluthge said Masikau and Jiujiuwa were first offenders and pleaded guilty to the charge at the first available opportunity.

The Judge also accepted that both men are remorseful for their actions and were influenced by alcohol to commit the robbery.

Justice Aluthge also considered that the two men saved the time and resources of the court by entering an early guilty plea.

The Judge sentenced Masikau to 2 years imprisonment.

He will have to serve only 6 months in prison with the remainder of the sentence suspended for 2 years.

Justice Aluthge sentenced Jiujiuwa to 2 years imprisonment.

The whole sentence is suspended for 2 years.

This means the two men may have to serve the sentence if they commit an offence within the suspended period.
