Two buses crash in Rakiraki, damaging power pole and cutting electricity

A collision between two buses early this morning in Nanokonoko, Rakiraki, has caused significant damage to a power pole, resulting in widespread power outages from Namuaimada to Navesau.

The accident occurred at 3.59am and impacted electricity supply along the Korovou feeder, with the disruption traced back to the Volivoli Substation.

Energy Fiji Limited confirmed they were alerted to the incident and immediately dispatched teams to isolate power and secure the area.

EFL states the collision damaged a critical power pole, leaving conductors entangled with the accident vehicles.

They say additional crews have since arrived at the site equipped with the necessary materials, a crane truck, and a replacement pole, ready to carry out urgent repair works.

These works will involve replacing the damaged pole, restringing conductors, and restoring associated infrastructure.

However, the restoration process is currently on hold as the vehicles involved in the crash remain entangled with the broken pole.

EFL states that works cannot commence until the accident vehicles are removed to allow access to the damaged infrastructure.

They also stated that a special team of Police Officers from Lautoka has been dispatched to conduct investigations at the scene.

Power restoration is expected to take 6–8 hours, weather permitting, once authorities clear the site.

The outage is affecting customers connected to approximately 208 transformers, and EFL is working with the National Control Centre (NCC) to explore options for partial restoration through backfeeding from the Vunidawa feeder, where possible.
