The bills to amend the three electoral laws for Fiji are ready.

This has been confirmed by Acting Attorney General, Siromi Turaga during the People’s Alliance AGM as he said that consultations have been done on the Electoral Act, Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding & Disclosures) Act, and the Electoral (Registration of Voters) Act.

This is after a question from a party member whether the electoral law changes will be done before the 2026 general elections.

Turaga says the bills are prepared within the constitution and that will change the electoral rules.

The Acting Attorney General says this will be taken to cabinet soon.

He says the elections will be conducted within the framework of the 2013 constitution until a referendum is conducted.

The review report of the electoral laws is yet to be made public by the government.

Meanwhile there was confusion during the Party AGM as Acting Attorney General Turaga had said that the Supreme Court had advised that 75 percent of support is needed in parliament and 50 percent plus 1 support of voters that vote in a referendum.

The Supreme Court had advised that the 2013 Fijian Constitution can be amended by the support of two thirds of Members of Parliament and a majority of those registered voters who vote for the change in a referendum after the parliamentary vote.

This was clarified by senior member of the party, Keni Dakuidreketi.

Turaga later apologised for the confusion.
